How to test Nickel allergy ?

Does your skin react when you come in contact with objects containing metals such as Nickel? Do you experiment redness, itching, tingling and irritation while touching or wearing costume jewelry, watches, jean buttons, leather accessories, smartphones and connected devices? If the answer is yes, you might be suffering from Nickel allergy. Learn in this article how to test Nickel allergy or contact allergy to Nickel.

Hypersensitivity to metals such as Nickel is something quite common: 10% of the world’s population is allergic to Nickel. But many people don’t even know that they’re allergic. If you want to know more about the symptoms, you can read our past article: what are Nickel allergy symptoms. You also need to go to your doctor or dermatologist to diagnose a Nickel allergy.

So how to test Nickel allergy?

Your doctor can first diagnose Nickel allergy based on your skin appearance. Indeed, after experimenting a rash, the best thing to do is to go to your doctor. He will try to determine with you the symptoms which can be for instance redness, itching, tingling and unexpected irritation. He will also ask if you’ve touched anything metal, or try new foods or products recently.

According to the Mayo clinic, “if the rash isn’t apparent, your doctor may recommend a patch test (contact hypersensitivity allergy test). He or she may refer you to an allergy specialist (allergist) or a skin specialist (dermatologist) for this test”.

What is patch testing about?

This is the reference method to diagnose if you are allergic or not to Nickel. The process of patch testing will take four days in total:

  • Day 1: the allergologist  usually applies the allergens on the upper back. They are kept in place with a special hypoallergenic adhesive tape. The patches stay in place undisturbed for 48 hours. It’s important to underline that each allergen has been tested to find the best concentration to demonstrate an allergic reaction without causing irritation to those who are not allergic to the material.
  • Day 2: first reading of the results. The patches are removed. If you have a Nickel allergy, the skin under the Nickel patch will be inflamed when the patch is removed or in the days after removal of the patch.
  • Day 4: 48 hour after the first reading, the results for each test site is recorded.

The irritant reactions may include sweat rash, follicular, pustules and burn-like reactions.  According to the website dermnetnz,” the interpretation of the results requires considerable experience and training”.

How to test Nickel allergy with the Protective Cream HPS?

You can test if you are allergic to Nickel with the Protective Cream HPS. For instance, if your earlobes react when you wear costume earrings, you can put some Protective Cream on only one earlobe. You need to keep wearing your costume earrings in both earlobes. If the reaction and the redness disappear where you have put the Protective Cream, then you are most likely allergic to Nickel. This is due to the fact that the Protective Cream HPS protects your skin from contact with Nickel by capturing metal ions on the skin’s surface and by preventing them from penetrating the epidermis.
