ECZEMA & PREGNANCY

Living better with your eczema during this exceptional period

Many women experience eczema during pregnancy. What can you do during this period to control your eczema? What treatments are possible and which should be avoided? Are there any risks for the baby? And finally, is eczema hereditary? Let's take stock together.

ATOPIC ECZEMA: WHAT CHANGES PREGNANCY?

  • Worsening of eczema in 50% of cases

  • Improvement of eczema in 25% of cases

  • Stable eczema in 25% of cases

ECZEMA & PREGNANCY: WHAT TREATMENTS ARE POSSIBLE? WHICH ARE TO AVOID?

There are no treatments to cure eczema, only treatments that limit the symptoms.

POSSIBLE TREATMENTS DURING PREGNANCY:

Dermocorticoids: although they are the subject of a lot of concern on the part of many pregnant women, they do not actually present any risk, particularly for the baby. Be careful however, the application of topical corticosteroids would tend to promote the appearance of stretch marks, particularly in areas more prone to this risk such as the stomach or thighs.

Moisturizing creams or emollient balms: Ensure that they comply with the Maternity Blacklist . No contraindication otherwise. They can and should be used to strengthen the barrier function of the skin, while providing comfort to skin weakened by pregnancy

Oral cortisone: If cortisone does not present any risk for pregnant women, it should be limited to particularly severe eczema flare-ups, over a short period of time, and in agreement with the attending physician and obstetrician.

UVB phototherapy: Is an alternative to cortisone in the event of a severe flare-up

Cyclosporine: Many studies show that it is safe for pregnant women. However, it is only exceptionally used during pregnancy.

TREATMENTS TO AVOID DURING PREGNANCY:

Protopic/Tacrolimus: Not compatible with pregnancy, it is necessary to find an alternative before becoming pregnant if this is the treatment implemented until then

PUVA phototherapy: Not recommended during pregnancy

ATOPIC SKIN & PREGNANCY: WHICH DERMOCOSMETIC ROUTINE TO ADOPT?

Skin is called  atopic because it does not play its role as a natural barrier . More permeable than normal skin, mothers affected by  atopic dermatitis thus develop a strong sensitivity to all allergens present in the environment. The skin dries out , develops red patches itches and pieces of skin come off (these are called scales).

ATOPIC DERMATITIS & PREGNANCY: WHICH PRODUCTS TO CHOOSE?

WHAT IS ATOPIC SKIN?

Pregnancy generally impacts the routine traditionally implemented: new constraints appear, particularly regarding the composition of the products used. Perfumes and alcohol should be absolutely avoided given the photosensitization and hypersensitivity of the skin during this period, while essential oils can represent a risk for the baby at certain concentrations.

When you are pregnant and have atopic skin, 3 actions are key:

Additional protection can, or even must, be considered: atopic skin being very sensitive to all allergens present in the environment, it is prudent to strengthen the barrier function of the skin by applying a protective product.

Hydration , i.e. a supply of water and lipids, will help strengthen the hydrolipidic film, restoring the skin's barrier function . By fighting against dry skin, a symptom of atopic skin reinforced by pregnancy, it will also provide more comfort.

Soothing your skin will finally limit inflammation and itching sensations, for skin that is more comfortable and less itchy.

ATOPIC DERMATITIS & PREGNANCY: WHAT RISKS FOR MY BABY?

ECZEMA IS NOT A CONTAGIOUS DISEASE!

An eczema flare-up during pregnancy, whatever its intensity, has no impact on the risk of transmission between mother and baby

Likewise, the disease cannot be transmitted by simple contact from the mother to her child after delivery.

THE GENETIC FACTOR PLAYS A ROLE ON THE OTHER HAND

  • Between 50% and 70% of individuals affected by atopic eczema have at least one parent who is also affected. Also, the genetic nature of this disease is proven.

If you, or your partner, are affected by atopic dermatitis, talk to your pediatrician to find out what symptoms to watch for in your child to detect the disease.

Perfum

Perfums are used to make products more pleasant to use. Having no other use than as marketing arguments, they increase the risk of reactions for sensitive skin and take the place of ingredients which could have a real benefit for the skin.

Paraben

Parabens are preservatives very common in the cosmetics industry. As part of endocrine disruptors, they are regularly singled out for representing a health risk and for accelerating the aging of the skin when exposed to the sun.

Silicones

Silicones are part of the range of occlusive ingredients, that is to say they form a film on the surface of the skin, preventing it from breathing. Coming from petrochemicals, they also contribute to the pollution of the planet.

Endocrine disruptors

Endocrine disruptors are substances that alter the functioning of the endocrine system, that is to say the production and action of hormones essential to metabolism. The World Health Organization (WHO) has been warning about these ingredients for several years, pointing to “an increased risk of health problems”.

Alcohol

There is a common misconception in cosmetics: all alcohols are harmful to the skin. If ethanol and isopropanol dry out the skin, break down its protective film and increase the risk of skin reactions, fatty alcohols have no disadvantages for the skin and health. We have therefore removed the first 2 from our ingredient lists.

Essential Oils

Of natural origin, essential oils are known to represent a significant risk of skin reactions for sensitive skin. They should also be absolutely avoided during pregnancy.

No controversial ingredients

Our experts are committed to developing particularly pure and safe products. We have banned 6 types of ingredients from all our formulas, making each of our products compatible with the MATERNITY INGREDIENTS BLACKLIST .
