Atopic dermatitis: What is it?
Atopic dermatitis – also called atopic eczema – is an inflammatory chronic skin disease which affects mainly children (15 % of infants) but may occur at any age. It causes dry, scaly and itchy patches on the skin. This disease alternates periods of flare up and remissions.
Atopic skin: How does it work?
A skin is called atopic when it does not play its role as a natural barrier. More permeable than normal skin, people with atopic dermatitis develop a strong sensitivity to all allergens present in the environment. The skin dries out, gets rashes, itches and pieces of skin come off (they are called scales).
Atopic skin: what consequences?
The alteration of the atopic skin’s structure has 2 main consequences:
- Since it lets water evaporate faster than regular skin, atopic skins are very dry and therefor need to be hydrated on a daily basis to avoid irritation
They are also more permeable to allergens from the environment and every day items (i.e. they let the allergens go through the skin). It is these allergens that are often responsible for inflammation.
