How to reduce Nickel allergy?

How to reduce Nickel allergy? This is a hard question. You will find in this article some prevention measures to avoid exposure to Nickel and then reduce symptoms.

  • Avoid Exposure

The first thing to do is to stay away from Nickel. Here are some tips from dermatologists and scientists to cope with Nickel allergy by avoiding exposure to Nickel. These tips are demonstrated in “Nickel Allergy: How to Avoid Exposure and Reduce Symptoms,” a video posted to the American Academy of Dermatology website and YouTube channel.

Avoid foods containing Nickel. If you are very sensitive to Nickel, adopt low-Nickel diets, which cut out certain Nickel-rich foods. Indeed, Nickel is present in most dietary items. And food is the major source of Nickel exposure for the general population. We wrote an article about how to adopt a Nickel allergy diet to reduce the amount of Nickel ingested that you can read by clicking here.

Avoid costume jewelry. A lot of people realize that they are allergic to Nickel after feeling itching and irritations while wearing costume jewelry. It’s because costume jewelry often uses a Nickel alloy as the base metal. Earrings, necklaces, rings, bracelets or watches can trigger symptoms of a Nickel allergy. To avoid this exposure, you can try to wear only Nickel-free jewelry or try the Protective Cream HPS  which protects your skin from contact with Nickel. Indeed, thanks to an exclusive and patented technology, the Protective Cream captures metal ions on the skin’s surface and prevents them from penetrating the epidermis. Inspect your clothing. Nickel is also present in belt buckles, bra hooks, and metal buttons, zippers, and snaps.  Try to avoid clothing with these elements. You can also use substitute materials such as zippers or clothing fasteners made of plastic or coated metals. Or you can create a barrier between these items and your skin using nail polish or the Protective Cream HPS.

Be careful with electronics. Recent studies or articles show that electronic devices, as well as, connected devices can contain Nickel.  You need to protect your skin from the contact with such objects (cells phones, laptops, tablets etc…). You can, for instance, read the article we wrote about how to wear an Apple Watch with a Nickel allergy by clicking here.

But It can be sometimes very hard considering that every day we come into contact with objects containing Nickel. For instance, some professions are in frequent contact with objects or materials which contain Nickel such as cashiers, health personnel, builders, hairdressers… In some extreme case, a change in position is necessary.

  • Reduce symptoms

Since it’s very challenging to avoid exposure to Nickel, you may want to know how to reduce symptoms of Nickel allergy.  First, you can read our full article about the symptoms and triggers of contact allergy to Nickel (or “Nickel allergy”) by clicking here.

Here is some advice to reduce the redness, tingling, itching and unexpected irritation linked with Nickel allergy:

1/ Protect your skin from Nickel. You can use gloves when you know that your hands are going to be in contact with Nickel. You can also try non-specific barrier cream. You may consider using the innovative Protective Cream HPS which provides up to 14 hours of protection.

2/ Use soothing lotions. In order to ease itching, the Hydrating Gel Plus HS provides triple emollient, humectant, and soothing actions. Using an exclusive and patented technology called Activifique, this cream releases its soothing agents over time.

3/ Moisturize regularly. According to a study published by Mayo Clinic: “your skin has a natural barrier that is disrupted when it reacts to Nickel and other allergens. Using emollient creams or lotion could reduce your need for topical corticosteroids”. You can try the Moisturizing Lotion HP which moisturizes the skin deep down and also provides protection against pollutants and contact with objects containing Nickel. This lotion is recommended for all skin type and of course for allergic ones. Also, it may reduce the risk of becoming sensitized to Nickel.
