Until the early 1980s, it was thought that psoriasis was mainly due to too much on the skin surface of cells that produce keratin, an essential element for the consistency of the skin. Skin inflammation was considered a side effect of the disease.
It is now known that psoriasis is actually due to a dysfunction of the immune system itself, which produces keratin-producing cells too quickly.
Biotherapy, one of the treatments used to fight against psoriasis since the 2000s, consists of using molecules to target and destroy the elements of the immune system responsible for this too rapid production of keratin. It’s the same process as recognition of a molecule by an antibody.
Biotherapies are therefore a very promising route among new treatments for psoriasis. For some patients, the use of these molecules has led to a dramatic improvement in their condition and disease.
However, the lack of hindsight, the side effects already and their costs limit their use to moderate or severe cases of psoriasis and are usually given as a second intention. They require sustained medical surveillance.
